WHAT EVERY MAN NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT PROSTRATE CANCER

When an abnormal, malignant growth of cells which is called a tumor forms in the prostrate it’s called prostrate cancer. Prostrate cancer is marked by an uncontrolled (malignant) growth of cells located just below the bladder and in front of the rectum, surrounding the urethra – the tube that carries urine out of the bladder. The prostrate produces and stores fluid that helps to make semen.

Prostrate cancer is the most common type of cancer found in men aside from skin cancer, and often begins without symptoms. Prostrate cancer can be slow-growing, such that many men die of other diseases before the prostrate cancer causes significant problems. However, many prostrate cancers are more aggressive and can spread outside the confines of the prostrate gland, which can be deadly. The prostrate cancer survival rate is greatly improved with early detection and personalized treatment.

It is estimated that 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostrate cancer in his lifetime. Prostrate cancer generally occurs in men over the age of 50. The average age of men diagnosed with prostrate cancer is 67. The following are also associated with an increased risk of advanced prostrate cancer: Height, high body mass index, low physical activity, smoking, low tomato sauce consumption, high calcium intake, and a positive family history.

It can cause pain in the lower back, in the groin area, or at the tip of the penis. Men with this problem often have painful ejaculation. They may feel the need to urinate frequently, but pass only a small amount of urine.

Symptoms of prostrate cancer

• Trouble urinating.

• Decreased force in the stream of urine.

Types of prostrate cancer

1. Aggressive, or fast growing

2. Nonaggressive, or slow growing With nonaggressive prostate cancer, the tumor either doesn’t grow or grows very little over time. With aggressive prostate cancer, the tumor can grow quickly and may spread to other areas of the body, such as the bones.

It is important to discuss all your treatment options, including their goals and possible side effects, with your doctors to help make the decision that best fits your needs.

Some important things to consider include:

• The stage and grade of your cancer

• Your age and expected life span

• Any other serious health conditions you have

• Your feelings (and your doctor’s opinion) about the need to treat the cancer right away.

• The likelihood that treatment will cure your cancer (or help in some other way).

• Your feelings about the possible side effects from each treatment.

You may feel that you must make a decision quickly, but it is important to give yourself time to absorb the information you have just learned.

Ask questions if there is anything you are not sure about. it is often a good idea to seek a second opinion. A second opinion can give you more information and help you feel more confident about the treatment plan you choose.
